Jeff - Welcome to the forum, Jeff. Your Savage is the same year as mine. You made a very good choice. I've gone thru a lot of bikes before I found one I like nearly as well. Concerning the oil leak, I would bet it's not your head gasket at all. The Savage is somewhat notorious for what's termed the 'infamous rubber plug leak'. Does'nt hurt anything, just causes a degree of annoyance. In my opinion it is caused by overfilling the crankcase with oil and running the engine at high speed or a combination of the two. I think, rather than rehash what has been said over and over, it would probably be best if you would scan thru the postings looking for references to the rubber plug leak. Actually it happens so frequently I cannot understand why someone with more computer knowledge than I have does'nt put the step by step fix in the technical section at the begining of this very web site. If, after you've had a chance to research this a little, you still need assistance, come back.
